 Yaroslav Shkandriy

Nowadays only few artists strive to reach the top professionalism of old masters - painters of the Renaissance epoch. The name of Yaroslav Shkandriy stands out among these few. One may assert without exaggeration that this artist is the only in Russia and, probably, in the whole world, who has mastered the technique of painting of such artists of genius as Leonardo da Vinci, Rubens, Sneiders.  He is one of those who follow the traditions of the great old masters.

Yaroslav Onufrievich Shkandriy was born on 24 February, 1948 in the town of Stanislav (called Ivano-Frankovsk from 1962). His passion for painting, belief in his vocation brought him to Leningrad where in 1970 he entered the Art School named after V.A. Serov (now named after N.K. Rerikh).  After  its graduation in 1974 Yaroslav Shkandriy continued his education at the Academy of Arts, Faculty of Painting, Restoration Department. In 1980 he graduated from the Academy and started working at  the Hermitage restoration studios; from 1981 he has been teaching at the Academy of Arts, heading the painting technique laboratory. Simultaneously he is engaged in creative work and takes part in art  exhibitions. His works have won recognition in our country and abroad; they are acquired by museum sand are contained in private collections. In 1988 Yaroslav  Shkandriy became a member of the Artists Union. He is a 1st category restorer working with easel  painting. The choice of Restoration Department of the Academy of Arts' Faculty of Painting enabled  him to master the technique of old  masters and achieve superb professionalism. He has reached  perfection in the painting technique of  Greek and early Italian schools, as well as  Italian,  French, Dutch, English painting techniques of XVI-XVIII centuries. Yaroslav Shkandriy's name is widely  known. In 1992 he was invited to Canada  where he ornamented a church in Toronto recreating the XlV-XVI-centuries' Byzantine style;  subsequently he worked in USA, Korea.

The artist works in all painting genres, using all kinds of materials: oil, water-colour, dry and oily pastel crayon, acryl, egg-based tempera and even wax dyes. He achieves perfection and live phonation of paints in all of his compositions, especially in his favorite genre, being most difficult -  the  portrait.  The miniatures executed by him strike one by subtlety of artistic performance and  unsurpassed  mastery. His miniature «Portrait of I. Arutyunyan» is in the Tretyakov Gallery.

The masterly level of technique and artistic culture are important constituents of Yaroslav  Shkandriy's creative art. The other facet of his art is based on the study of nature. He notes: «Artists often try to draw inspiration in their personal self. But we do not have so much inside us as we might think. The nature is what God has created. The nature is what inspires us». Working over the portrait, the artist sets the task to himself to expose the inner substance of a human, to show his virtues. The same  concerns his landscapes and still lifes.

Yaroslav Shkandriy does not follow any specific trends of our time in his creative art, no matter whether they have the prefix «neo» or end with «ism». He chose the only way continuing the natural course of evolution in the development of painting, that could be called the old masters' way.

Yaroslav Shkandriy participated in painting of the recreated Cathedral of the Redeemer in Moscow.  He painted four seraphs on one of the small domes and the icons of the Holy Virgin on the arches: the Vladimir-, the Don-, the Jerusalem- and the Iberian- Icons of the Mother of God - one of the most revered in Russia.

A first-class restorer of easel painting and a member of the Union of Artists, Yaroslav Shkandry has contributed to numerous exhibitions of art. His works are now in museum collections in Russia and private collections in Sweden, Canada, United States, Israel, United Kingdom, Holland, Germany, Italy, France and the United Arab Emirates.

Shkandry's the oretical and professional interests include the artistic media of various periods and schools, such as the early Italian and Greek schools and the Italian, French, Dutch and English painting of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. He is well acquainted with the oeuvres of Sir Peter  Paul  Rubens and the artists of his school.

Yaroslav Shkandriy is also familiar with the Russian school of painting. In 1992, he painted the murals for a church in the Byzantine style of the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries in Toronto, Canada* He restored painterly plafonds on the ceiling of the Metropolitan Club in New York in 1996 and 1997. In 1999, Shkandry executed a series of painterly commissions for the Church of Christ the Saviour in Moscow (in the small cupola and choral arches) and the Russian Orthodox  Church  in Seoul, Korea. An outstanding miniaturist and portraitist, Shkandry has an excellent command of pastels,  watercolors, tempera and oil painting. He is also the author of articles and  publications in specialist,  student and periodical literature on the technical and technological aspects of painting, the subject he    teaches at the llya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and  Architecture in St Petersburg.   Yaroslav Shkandriy
